Fine Spanish Morion C.1580-90

Price: Sold
Item Number: 95-36
Nothing short of an icon! Fine Spanish Morion C.1580-90. One piece construction. Large rounded skull with original rosette (edges worn) and rivets securing remnants of the liner band within. Matching conical brass rolled edge plume holder. High rounded roped comb with incised line border. Matching double line border following the intersection of the skull and comb base. Elegantly flared brim with dramatically sunken border and rolled and roped edge. Metal shows some spotty old smooth black arrested oxidation mixed with mottled gray patina. Mounts excellent for the period. A fine representative example of what is probably the most identifiable of all helmet forms. The helmet of Spanish colonization including the Caribbean and American Southwest. Its service on the Spanish Main makes it inextricably associated with piracy of the period. Its use in the colonies weaves it into American and Mexican history. Additionally, as northern Italy was ruled by the Spanish Hapsburgs, it is also specifically associated with northern Italy and examples of this exact form are found with identifiably Italian decoration. Truly deserving of public display.
