PROBABLY SOUTH GERMAN. 82 3/4" o.a. Wood haft displaying unusual quality and craftsmanship. Upper segment of slightly tapered octagonal form, concave stepped in banded segment to lower octagonal segment slightly stepped to round section with decorative chisel strokes to each of the edge terminals. Balance slightly tapered through its length with expanded spherical butt. Lower segment showing a gentle curve through its length as was often incorporated to facilitate swinging. See Stone Fig. 374 No. 1 for a 17th Century German morningstar with that feature. The head with heavy staggered pyramidal spikes, broad top band and heavy diamond section top spike. Sound and complete, showing great age. Medium to heavy encrustation to the haft-probably age preservative with age soiling. Few lineal checks as expected, with a few scattered worm holes. The metal with sound encrusted surface as well. Exceptional quality and fine display.
