FINE AMERICAN REVOLUTIONARY WAR SPONTOON OR PIKE
Item Number: d4
Wrought iron, 13 3/4” length, with leaf shaped medial ridged blade and opened seam conical socket. The junction with a well forged raised chevron. Untouched New England example with original pitch or tar surface coat, likely applied after the Revolution for storage in a state militia arsenal. The socket with some inactive red rusting/minor pitting showing through. Similar to several examples preserved in public and private collections, this example is superior for its quality and condition, untouched since the 18th century. Due to the lack of weapons during the first two years of the Revolution, American infantry were largely armed with such pikes, nearly all of which have now perished.
