30 1/8 d.e. blade of thick diamond section with deep fullers marked SEBASTIAN/HERNANDES respectively. Brass hilt with symmetrical thickened edge shell guards, large fully circular arms of the guard and recurved lobed terminal cross guard. Wire wrapped grip with banded ferrules and olive form pommel. Excellent for the period throughout with good patina to the hilt. Blade with smooth gray patina and crisp inscription. The Hernandez family is among the most respected of Toledo sword makers of the 16th and 17th centuries with no less than three examples signed Sebastian Hernandes in the famous Wallace Collection. Three Sebastians, including the Elder, still living in 1637, are recorded. This example is the work of Sebastian III and represents an extreme in the evolution of the rapier to smallsword with its dramatically simplified guard.
