EUROPEAN SIEGE HELMET C.1625

The Thirty Years War (1618-48) was fought under the cloak of religion to attack the Habsburg empire. Vast devastation of Germanic states resulted in the destruction of thousands of castles and a reduction of the male population in Germany by nearly half. This helmet was made for castle attack and meant to protect the wearer against the hail of rocks, hot lead or oil and anything else which the defenders could bring to the wall. Its form reverts to the barbute of a century and a half earlier. It is made in two pieces with the medial seam forming a crest which helped to divert impacting objects, as well as the blows of a defender should the wearer succeed in reaching the top of the wall. It originally had a thick liner which served both to cushion any impacts and distribute its great weight. Weight: 11 lb. 4 oz.
