Forged iron, 2 1/4 width. Concave interface to seat it on the wood haft. The perimeter is forged in a series of angled elongated pyramidal projections flanked by pairs of smaller projections. The larger projections are in response to the increased use of iron plate with mail armor and as with the above example, the projections are arranged in a band corresponding to the striking zone of the head. Minor erosion to two of the smaller projections otherwise excellent. An important evolutionary example representing a discrete period in the evolution of armor.
