EUROPEAN IRON MACE 12TH TO EARLY 13TH CENTURY.

Price: $2,150.00
Item Number: 09-810
This example represents the virtual reinvention of the mace.  Thicker and more extensive use of iron plate dictated that the energy of a blow be concentrated rather than distributed as with a two or three point contact.  The core is a cylindrical tube, slightly flared at one end which undoubtedly was the top, secured to its haft by a wedge.  Six flanges with flared bases taper to near knife edges.  As the effect of the impact would be greatly reduced by connecting with two flanges, neither at a right angle and both with the ability to flex and absorb some energy, it is reasonable to assume that the mace was oriented in the hand with a single flange forward, when possible.  Excellent condition for the period with the tool marks which seated the flanges for the forged welds clearly visible.
