12th century. Dating to the period of the later Crusades as well as conflicts in Europe, this mace is of near spherical form with a band of pyramidal shaped projections covering the effective striking area of its surface. The size and spacing of the projections are on scale with the links of chain mail in use at the time. It comprises the ultimate response to the development and wide spread use of iron chain mail in Europe. It was eminently effective against the Saracens and examples have been found at Crusades battle sites, including along the Danube. 2 1/8 width, in good stable excavated condition with detail intact.
