AN ITALIAN RAPIER C.1700 MADE FOR A BOY

This fascinating weapon was made by a master sword smith for a boy of about 10 years old who would have had several years of training by the time he owned it.  It is a lethal weapon in every sense and of a quality which would have made it envied by many adults.  When new, its glistening black hilt chiseled in rococo motifs would have contrasted with its silver grip and punctuated the importance of its owner, who was, most likely, of noble birth.  Boys and young men of that privileged class were schooled in fencing by, primarily Italian masters, from about the age of five, by which time they were comfortable with the sword, having routinely carried a smaller childs version.  Fencing and dueling were fundamental to their life style and social position and their swords ranked among their most prized possessions.
