AN ENGLISH BROADSWORD C.1640
Item Number: 08-683
This is a further example of the mortuary hilt which gained popularity around the time of the English Civil Wars. It preserves the form of the hilt which is deeply chiseled in somewhat abstracted foliage incorporating flower heads in place of the royal portraits. Their absence does not necessarily indicate a Parliamentarian owner, but allowed the owner to pass comfortable among supporters of both sides. As with nearly all of these, the blade is German and bears the Passau wolf mark inlaid in copper, as well as a makers mark at the forte, each side. Double edged blades are far less common than single edged examples. Blade length: 34 1/2

This example is based in form on the previous two, but utilizes a hilt simplified and undecorated. The radially fluted guard supports a hilt basket of swelled medial bars.
