A SPANISH SOUTHWEST FIGHTING KNIFE C.1800

Price: $2,850.00
Item Number: 10-35
This extraordinary example has an unmistakable connection to the legendary bowie knife which evolved in the first quarter of the 19th century.  Its with reinforced forte displays a vestigal clipped point.  The left side is decorated with chisel and punch work in hounds tooth and pellet and floral motif with remnants of copper inlay.  The iron guard is of bar and disk form which was popular at the end of the 18th century.  (See Neumann, 9.K. )  The octagonal section grip is of brass plates flanked by slightly smaller copper plates between black horn segments resulting in ridges which allowed for better purchase.  This knife predates Jim Bowies career by about 15-20 years.  While we have seen no other examples, it likely was of a group in fashion at the time which served as inspiration for the classic bowie knife which ultimately, was produced in vast numbers in America and England.

blade length 9 5/8"
