A SPANISH LEFT HAND DAGGER C.1570-85

This dagger was made en suite with a rapier with which it served. In dueling, a number of structured maneuvers utilizing the two together comprised the defense and offense. Primarily used to engage an opponent's blade, the dagger had the capability of delivering a fatal thrust even to an opponent wearing a brigandine. It is the rapiers, particularly dated examples, which provide us with the typology for the daggers. This example may be compared to a rapier by Thomas de Aiala of Toledo in the collection of the Musee de l'Armee, Paris which is dated 1570 on its pommel. This example bears maker's marks on its ricasso which appear to be unrecorded. Blade length: 14"
