The elegant silver work on this dagger incorporates a number of techniques including embossing, inlay and overlay. Russian costume was traditionally rich in silver mounts and the kindjal, historically the essential side arm of the Caucasus, became an integral part in the late 19th century. The last decades of Imperial Russia were turbulent and personal protection was important. This fine dagger served both as a fashion accessory and a weapon for personal defense.
