A RARE PAIR OF NORTH EUROPEAN FINGERED GAUNTLETS C.1570
Item Number: 10-629
This pair of gauntlets would have been originally mounted with an armor, including close helmet, all of which would have been painted black. The paint served to preserve the iron which was always a concern. Additionally, it prevented reflection in the sun which would have announced the presence of the rider at a great distance. While largely functional, decorative touches include the rivet lined sunk cuff borders and the rolled upper edges which are roped in opposite directions meeting as chevrons at the medial ridge and bottom. 16th century gauntlets surviving in pairs are exceedingly rare. This pair is distinguished as both are complete and the original painted finish is preserved throughout.
