A GERMAN SWEPT HILT RAPIER C.1580

Price: Sold
Item Number: 08-120
An evolutionary form identified by Norman as hilt type 58 which he dates from 1565. Straight cross guard with large right side loop connected to the knuckle bow with a side bar and suspending a large pair of arms with a smaller right side loop and three bars to the rear joining the knuckle bow. The lower bars forming a defense for the top two fingers which gripped the ricasso within it. Fine wire bound grip and large barrel shaped pommel. In excellent preservation throughout for the period and complete with its original iron mounted black leather scabbard. Rapier fashions generally stayed popular for longer periods and it is seldom that we can date a rapier, based on scholarly research, to the 16th century. This example traces its roots to the arming swords of mid century. Blade length: 42 1/2
