A FINE GERMAN RAPIER DATED 1585
Item Number: 09-921
This sword is evidently the earliest dated example of its form. The fine hilt is comprised of a single side ring which joins the lower guard and is connected to the knuckle bow by a curved bar. The form is discussed in The Rapier and Smallsword, page 127 where it is identified as hilt form 57. Dating is based on a portrait dated 1588 in the Metropolitan Museum of Art and a span of 1585-1640 is suggested. The text further identifies an example in the Tojhusmuseum, Copenhagen dated 1589 about which the author states So far I have not seen a hilt of type 57 which could be dated earlier than this. The blade of this example is clearly dated 1585 flanking the running wolf mark and thus represents the earliest dated example published. It is further distinguished by its exceptional age character and original pierced side guard plate.
Blade length: 40"

This sword is from a well known group studied by A. V. B. Norman. Evidently all were made in Munich and among others, served the the Munich Town Guard.
Its high rounded upper hilt bar dates this rapier to the first quarter of the 17th century.
The hilt is heavily encrusted in high relief silver foliage and classical portrait heads. The grip is wrapped in silver wire. The result is a lovely weapon which, in hands schooled to it, was the match of any on the street. Blade length: 28
