Revolutionary War period. 3 1/4” length of black japanned papier-mâché. The lid inlaid with a pewter border and central medallion (complete). Excellent preservation with aroma of snuff inside. Pewter foil inlay on a black japanned body is the most common construction and takes many forms. These were used to carry snuff or pipe tobacco interchangeably. See Collector’s Illustrated Encyclopedia of the America Revolution, Neumann p.245 and 246 for examples.
